Head of Research Engineering

Butlr Technologies·Anonymous thermal sensing for the built environment
Jan 2026— present

I own the research engineering function at Butlr — edge algorithms and firmware, cloud pipelines, ML, dashboards, developer tooling. Most of my time is spent at the seams between layers.

  1. 01 /Technical direction across the full stack — firmware and edge, ingest and ML, dashboards and dev tooling. Setting the bar for how we ship: conventions, reliability patterns, CI.
  2. 02 /AI-native infrastructure — agentic tools, our public open-source MCP server, and persistent agents that diagnose the production fleet over Slack.
  3. 03 /Platform reliability — architected the edge-to-cloud ingest rearchitecture (MQTT-centric, durable buffering, per-tenant routing) and led the Rust port of our core detection algorithms.

The thread across every role has been cross-functional technical leadership at the intersection of hardware, software, and whoever’s on the other end of the thing being built.

01
Principal Product & Solution Architect
Butlr Technologies
  • Defined and drove product and solution architecture strategy, aligning with Butlr’s mission for smarter, people-aware buildings.
  • Bridged Engineering, Product, Sales, and Customer Success teams to translate customer needs into delivery.
  • Led end-to-end implementation of bespoke customer solutions for enterprise accounts.
02
Field Applications Engineer
Butlr Technologies
  • Owned product development efforts for Butlr’s three largest software and hardware deployments — 50% of the total installed base.
  • Built outcome-based roadmaps tied to customer requirements rather than feature velocity.
03
Solutions Engineering Specialist II, Cortex
Palo Alto Networks
  • Technical lead for a $49M endpoint security + SOC delivery contract spanning state C-level leadership and hundreds of constituent organizations.
  • Architected Atlassian Confluence information flows adopted by all 12k PANW employees.
  • Represented the company as presenter and technical session leader at industry events.
04
Security Solutions Engineer, Vulnerability Management
Rapid7
  • 81% POC win rate against primary competitors; closed 176 new logos; 163% attainment against OKRs.
  • Presenter at CISO Seattle, Black Hat, DEF CON, and eight Rapid7 Customer Roadshows.
05
Cyberspace Operations & Program Management
United States Air Force

Four roles across five years — cyber operations, space operations, and S&T program management.

  • Weapons & Tactics and Attack Crew Commander, 91st Cyberspace Operations Squadron — led a cross-functional team of 11 designing and deploying the Air Force’s top-requested cyber attack weapon suite globally.
  • Section Chief, Nuclear Detonation Detection — managed the NUDET payload for a 34-satellite fleet including GPS Block III.
  • S&T Portfolio Manager, F-35 Joint Program Office — $45M portfolio spanning 16 cutting-edge manufacturing, software, and production programs.

I

Marine & sailing systems

A coherent stack for the sailboat — plumbing at the bottom, domain reasoning in the middle, AI at the top.

  • SV Afterglow Data Hub

NMEA2000 to SignalK to InfluxDB and Grafana — vessel telemetry on a Raspberry Pi.

  • Proteus

Tactical race-routing engine in Rust — weather, tides, and telemetry fused into routing decisions.

  • Proteus UI

Map-first tactical dashboard for Proteus — the crew-facing side of the engine.

  • Afterclaw

LLM tactician and crew-mate persona running on the boat over Telegram — weather, tactics, crew chat.

  • Pipes marine telemetry into HA so the boat plays nicely with the rest of my systems.

  • Local-network control of Lumitec Poco marine lighting from HA.

II

Rocketry

  • MaxQMaxQ Lab

Web-based aerodynamics and flight simulation — drag, fin flutter, stability, Monte Carlo trajectory, dispersion mapping.

  • IREC Database

A web app for collegiate rocketry teams and their rockets at IREC.

III

AI & agentic tooling

Agents, integrations, and workflows that do real work on real systems.

  • butlr-mcp

Open-source Model Context Protocol server for Butlr—published to npm under OIDC trusted publishing, so integrators can plug Butlr into their own agents.

  • Claude-native development workflows

Reusable GitHub workflows, agentic CI, and persistent agent-supported operations tooling deployed at platform scale.

  • Contributions to the upstream Home Assistant Model Context Protocol server.

IV

Home & everyday

  • Stoke Lair

Multi-mode Home Assistant configuration — HomeKit, Siri, Frigate, motion automations, migration framework.

V

Side quests

The things that sit outside the main threads — and keep the main threads honest.

  • Sandy

macOS AR sandbox — a spiritual successor to Magic-Sand.

  • Wreckordbox

DJ set planner over a Rekordbox library enriched with Spotify audio features.

  • A single-page map aggregating UFO / UAP sightings. I contributed tooling and CI.
